The plot plan.

A plot plan provides a bird's-eye view of your lot, using a scale to place all existing features. Accuracy is important in drawing the plot plan so that you have identified the space available for planting. The plot plan should show: the scale used, a north arrow to signify direction, any slopes or drainage patterns, existing plants, any underground utilities.

Tree removal is often necessary.

Learn what to look for in hiring services or arborists for tree removal, like clauses in their contracts. Tree removal, remember, is dangerous. Limbing is less severe, but still check that services are insured. Do-it-yourselfers can get rid of stumps themselves, although services offer stump grinding; alternatively, rent your own stump grinders.

Cool-season grass

Cool-season grass removes easily, simply turn off the water supply right before removal and dig it out. Fescue, Bluegrass and Ryegrass are examples of cool-season grasses.

Planning

One of the first steps to designing your own landscape is to conduct a site and needs assessment. Review your current landscape and decide what you want to change or create in your yard.

Compost

The hard, caliche-based soil found in Southern Nevada often lacks the nutrients essential to flower beds and gardens. Adding compost to the soil can improve the soil's texture and ability to conserve moisture.

Mulch

Mulch, also known as "top dressing," is a protective covering used to protect plants. Placed around the plant, mulch reduces water lost to evaporation by as much as 30 percent. Mulch also helps plants stay healthy by preventing frozen roots and weed growth.

Plant Tree Before the Ground Freezes!

n the North, there's not much work to do outside now. On the occasional warm day Mother Nature grants us in November, there are a few tasks worth doing, including planting trees.
